CAROLINAS PGA SECTION PLAYS HOST TO PATRIOT GOLF DAY AT 423 FACILITIES THIS WEEKEND!

New Record for the Carolinas!

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (September 3, 2010) – The Carolinas PGA Section is proud to announce that 423 facilities are currently slated to host special events that will help raise money for the Folds of Honor Foundation, an organization that provides secondary education scholarships to the families of our military heroes wounded or killed in the line of duty. Patriot Golf Day 2010 will be hosted at those facilities throughout the Carolinas this Labor Day Weekend, September 3 – 6.

Major Dan Rooney, Program Leader for the Folds of Honor Foundation, started Patriot Golf Day after he’d finished his second tour of duty in Iraq, recognizing the tremendous need to provide support to the families of his comrades, killed and injured. Patriot Golf Day events range in organization from a simple $1 addition to greens fees, all the way to Patriot Golf Day tournaments and clinics, from which all proceeds go to the Folds of Honor Foundation.

To date, the Folds of Honor Foundation has raised over $5 million for their number one beneficiary, the families of our soldiers injured or killed in the line of military duty. Over 95% of donations go directly to those families in the form of educational scholarships.

You can show your support by finding a Patriot Golf Day facility near you at PlayGolfAmerica.com or by donating online at Foldsofhonor.org.

In 2009, the Carolinas PGA Section experienced a banner year as 404 facilities in North and South Carolina joined the effort to aid the families of our injured and fallen military servicemen and women. Nearly $200,000 was raised, which accounted for roughly 10% of the total donations nationwide in 2009. Now, with even greater participation, we are hoping to shatter donation records yet again, while honoring the sacrifices our military servicemen and women make each day for our freedom. Carolinas PGA Section President, Karl Kimball, PGA, says he’s excited for the Section and each of its members in what they have the opportunity to do.

"For every PGA professional Patriot Golf Day is the greatest outward expression of Patriotism,” said Kimball. “For us to have the opportunity and ability to assist in taking care of those who have paid the ultimate price for our freedoms is nothing less than an honor. It is with great pride that I join my fellow PGA professionals on this wonderful mission.”

Last year, the Carolinas PGA Section topped all other Sections in participation and donations, and once again called itself home to the facility that gave the largest single donation. Carolinas PGA Section Past President Kelly Childs, the director of golf at the Country Club of Sapphire Valley (Cashiers, N.C.) gave his members the tools to raise $20,000 for the Folds of Honor Foundation through a unique Hot–Air Balloon Golf Ball toss. Additionally, Kimball, who is the PGA director of golf at Hillandale Golf Course in Durham, NC., and Carolinas PGA Executive Director, Ron Schmid, PGA, of Myrtle Beach, S.C. ran in October’s Marine Corps Marathon, adding to the Section total another $16,000 raised between the two as part of the Folds of Honor team. Collectively the marathon team of 26 runners raised more than $80,000.

Other notable 2009 donations came from the Burroughs & Chapin family of courses in Myrtle Beach, where ten courses collectively raised $27,000. As well, more than $16,000 was raised by PGA Director of Golf Tom Ducey and the members of Old North State Club in New London, N.C. It was a solid addition to their donation last year of over $38,000, which is still the largest single donation ever given by a facility.

Tom Hoch Selected by Southworth Development to Design Creighton Farms Clubhouse

Design-Build Firm to Create Centerpiece for Jack Nicklaus Signature Course, Luxury Community Outside Washington D.C.

(Oklahoma City, Okla.) -- Tom Hoch -- a pioneer in revenue-based design and turn-key, design-build interior architecture solutions -- has been selected by Southworth Development to provide interior design services for the planned clubhouse at Creighton Farms in Aldie, VA.

To complement the luxury residential project’s pastoral setting in the rolling hills and lush valleys of Loudon County’s historic estate and hunting country, the Tom Hoch design team will develop a “refined yet relaxed” interior design that appeals to the aspirations of today’s private club member. Featuring three-levels and over 32,000-square-feet, the interior space will echo an American Vernacular architectural motif.

“Tom Hoch has a proven track record of designing and building memorable spaces that are appropriate to the long-term visions of some of the finest properties in the U.S.,” says Greg Sherwood, Vice President of Southworth Golf Management. “The firm employs an industry-leading mix of creative talent, industry expertise and state-of-the-art systems that enable it to complete turn-key projects of all scopes and scales.”

“From the clubhouse to the golf course and beyond, Southworth Development is truly committed to providing the best possible member and guest experience,” says Hoch. “We are honored to have been selected to work with Southworth to create the architectural centerpiece for Creighton Farms.”

The main level of the clubhouse features “The Nicklaus Room” -- a celebration of Jack Nicklaus as an American sportsman -- as well as a pub, grille room with seating for up to 175 guests, full-service golf shop, library and billiards room. The lower level includes men’s and women’s locker rooms and lounges as well as a state-of-the-art fitness center. Ten club rooms occupy the upper level, providing overnight accommodations for members and guests alike.

Included in its design are custom cabinetry, counters and fixtures cast out of reclaimed and re-milled hardwood from local barns that are part of the original property. It is scheduled to open May 2011.

Removed from the clamor and congestion of the city, Creighton Farms is located 20 minutes west of Dulles International Airport outside Washington, D.C. Managed by Southworth Development, the luxury community is nestled in the sweeping Northern Virginia landscape, rich in history, tradition and promise. Custom-build homes sit alongside the 18-hole, par-72 Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course -- one of the premier courses on the Eastern Seaboard, recognized as one of the “Best New Courses in the World” by Travel + Leisure Golf in 2008.

Other recent U.S. and internationally-based Tom Hoch projects include: The Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain (Marana, Arizona); The Members’ Golf Club at The Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota (Florida); Farm Links Golf Club (Alabama); Renaissance Golf Club (Massachusetts); TPC Valencia (California); Zavidovo Golf and Lake Resort (Russia); and Tulsa Country Club (Oklahoma); multiple projects with Troon Golf; Apes Hill Club (Barbados); and The Abaco Club (Bahamas).
The GOLF Magazine best-of lists are available online and will be featured in the September 2010 print edition of the magazine.

“The state of Mississippi is proud to be recognized by GOLF Magazine and have these fine courses listed among the very best in America," said Mary Beth Wilkerson, Tourism Director for the Mississippi Development Authority. “Our great year-round weather and variety of courses to choose from make Mississippi one of the best golf destinations in the U.S. and our hope is that these rankings encourage people to visit our state and experience all that we have to offer.”

Fallen Oak is an amenity of Beau Rivage Resort & Casino in Biloxi, while Dancing Rabbit is one of the many amenities at Pearl River Resort, the central Mississippi casino resort that is owned and operated by the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians. Grand Bear is an amenity of the Grand Casino Biloxi, which is owned and operated by Harrah’s.

Fallen Oak moved up two spots in this year’s GOLF Magazine ranking to No. 27 overall out of roughly 13,500 U.S. public access courses. Located 15 miles north of the Beau Rivage on 510-acres adjacent to the DeSoto National Forest, Fallen Oak is a "sister" course to Shadow Creek in Las Vegas, both MGM Resorts International properties. The course opened in 2006 and this past spring it played host to the Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic, a PGA Champions Tour event.

Dancing Rabbit's Azaleas and Oaks courses roll out over a combined 14,000 breathtaking yards. Secluded among ancient pines and hardwoods, each of these par-72 masterpieces embraces the gently rolling hills and valleys indigenous to the region. Over two miles of spring-fed creeks and streams weave their way through the lush Bermuda and Zoysia fairways and Bentgrass greens, lending both challenge and beauty to the picturesque environment.

Grand Bear opened in 1999 is a Jack Nicklaus Signature design consistently rated as one of the best casino courses in the country. Set deep inside the DeSoto Forest along the red-clay banks of the Big Biloxi and Little Biloxi Rivers, the course features towering pines, natural cypress wetlands, secluded fairways, deep bunkers and impeccably manicured greens. It measures 7,204 yards from the “Grizzly Bear” tees and 4,802 from the “Teddy Bear” tees.

Shell Landing Golf Club is a Davis Love III design located in Gautier, less than one mile from the coast. All levels of golfers will enjoy the course thanks to its five sets of tees. Shell Landing offers a distinctive layout that meanders through a combination of marshes, bayous and tall pines. As the round goes along it builds in drama, climaxing with a crescendo on both the No. 9 and 18 holes.

Jack Nicklaus to Visit Kaua‘i Lagoons Golf Club Renovation Project

Golden Bear Will Review Redesign Progress on Renowned Kiele Course this Friday

(KAUA'I, Hawaii) – Jack Nicklaus will be on the island of Kaua’i this week to review the much-anticipated renovation project at Kaua’i Lagoons Golf Club, which includes the addition of another ocean hole.

The original designer, Nicklaus will be at Kauai Lagoons on Friday, Aug. 20 to ensure it meets his exacting and acclaimed standards. Renovation of the Kiele Ocean back nine holes began in June and is expected to be completed in May, 2011. Currently 18 of the 36 holes designed by Nicklaus there – adjacent to the Marriott Resort on Kalapaki Beach – are in play, consisting of nine holes from the Kiele Course and nine holes from the Mokihana Course.

“We look forward to receiving Mr. Nicklaus’s feedback on the Kauai Lagoons’ renovation,” said Kaua’i Lagoons Director of Golf Scott Ashworth, PGA. “The Kiele Course has been rated one of the best courses in the country since it opened, and Mr. Nicklaus’s design portfolio speaks for itself, so our expectations for the new, enhanced Kiele are immense.”

The Kiele “Ocean” back nine will include three new holes and the renovation of six holes. Upon completion it will feature a half-mile stretch of oceanfront holes – the longest in golf-rich Hawaii. All renovated holes will receive new irrigation, greens, bunkers, and drainage. Many of the holes will also have some minor design changes as well. A new first hole of the third nine at Kauai Lagoons is also being added.

Nicklaus – who has many course designs ranked among the world’s best by leading golf magazines – will review the newly designed first hole of the third nine and the first two holes of the former Kiele back nine, which are new golf holes that have been shaped with new bunkers and greens in place. Nicklaus said he wants to sign off on these holes before grassing begins. He will also observe the 11th, 12th and 13th holes – a scintillating stretch of holes approaching and bordering the Pacific – and provide guidance on the work at Hole No. 15, a brand-new ocean hole.

The signature 16th hole – which hugs the coastline and has a green that sits on lava rock overlooking Nawiliwili Harbor – will have its gorgeous layout remain intact, but add a new green, irrigation and bunker sand. Nicklaus has also indicated he would like to provide direction for the substantial changes being made to the greens on the 17th and 18th holes.

Renovation of the Kiele front nine and the Mokihana holes is scheduled to begin in 2012 and will eventually give Kaua’i Lagoons 27 Jack Nicklaus Signature golf holes.

The Kaua’i Marriott Resort on Kalapaki Beach is oceanfront property that just completed a $50-million makeover last month. Earlier this summer, the resort was included on Conde Nast Traveler's prestigious list of “Top 80 Golf Resorts” and last year GolfWorld magazine named it at “Top 50 Resort Course.”

Pocono Mountains Golf News and Notes: Jack Frost National and Woodloch Springs Named to GOLF Magazine’s 2010 Best-Of State Rankings

(POCONO MOUNTAINS, PA.) – The Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureau announces today that Jack Frost National Golf Club and Woodloch Springs Golf Course and Country Club have been ranked on GOLF magazine’s biennial “Best Courses You Can Play" by state list for 2010. Both courses are located in the beautiful Pocono Mountains (www.800poconos.com), where there are more than 35 courses of different price point and style from which to choose.

Selected from more than 800 golf courses in the state, Jack Frost was ranked No. 8 while Woodloch Springs came in at No. 15 on the elite list. GOLF Magazine’s complete listing of courses is available online and will be featured in the September 2010 edition of the magazine.

Last year, Jack Frost National (www.jackfrostnational.com) was named to GOLF Magazine’s Top-20 new courses list and was also ranked in the Top-10 “Courses You Can Play” in the state by Golfweek. The course is located in the heart of the Pocono Mountains, and is uniquely situated on the crest of Jack Frost Mountain, at an elevation of 2,000 feet. Spanning over 7,200 yards and more than 200 acres, this Terry LaGree, player-friendly design covers magnificent terrain, beautiful landscapes and offers striking vistas.

Woodloch Springs (www.woodloch.com) has been described as one of the most beautiful courses in the Northeast and earned a 4.5 star rating on Golf Digest’s “Best Places To Play.” The course winds its way through fern-carpeted forest, lush wetlands and broad upland meadows and with four sets of tees on every hole, all levels of play can be accommodated. The outstanding signature 14th hole requires a dramatic 220-yard carry over "Hells Gate Gorge," which is carved from the rugged mountainside by rushing water some 200 feet below.
Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureau Selects its ‘Must-See’ Fall Foliage Golf Holes

One of the most scenic and pleasurable times of the year to visit the Pocono Mountains is nearly upon us. Beginning later this month and running through late October, travelers heading to the region’s golf courses will be treated to the vibrant colors of the fall season. The Pocono Mountain Visitors Bureau has selected these three “Fall Classics” as the “Must-See” Fall Foliage Golf Holes for 2010:

Hole #7, Blue Course, The Shawnee Inn Golf and Resort: This testy par-3 is one of 24 holes of this 27-hole facility that rests on the charming Shawnee Island. It can play from 132 yards from the front tees to 177 yards from the tips, but no matter from what tee box you play, you’ll have to carry the inlet of the Delaware River that gently flows in front of the sloping green.

Hole #11, Split Rock Golf Club: Standing atop the tee box of this 555-yard, downhill par-5, golfers are treated to one of the most gorgeous views in all of the Pocono Mountains and can stare miles away. It is one of the many holes at Split Rock surrounded by the kind of trees indigenous to the area that positively burst with color in the fall.

Hole #16, Woodloch Springs Golf Course and Country Club: Don’t get caught gazing at the scenic view here too long because this is the most difficult par-4 on the course. The elevated four-tiered green makes par feel like a birdie on this 386-yard beauty that has two different hazards running across the width of the hole.
The par 71 North course and the nine-hole Centre course, which opened in June 2008 were designed by two-time major winner Greg Norman, and have played host to Sergio Garcia’s Pro-Am tournament in two of the past three years – a further testament to the developments rapid maturity and expansion.

“With the collaboration of Troon Golf, we are convinced that Lumine Golf Club will soon be recognized amongst the finest golf resorts in the region,” said Luis Rullan, president and managing director of Mediterranea Beach & Golf Community. “Troon Golf’s expertise in managing golf courses, combined with our team, will enable us to further develop our project and services and offer a high-end product to our customers.”

The North course is arguably the most technically challenging of Norman’s designs at Mediterranea, which requires a certain level of precision and strategy. The Centre course has integrated archeological remains, historical towers and sea views that make it unique to the Spanish region. The par 72 South course was founded on environmentally sustainable concepts and includes an irrigation system that utilizes recycled water. All three courses at Mediterranea are the first in Spain to be granted the “Audubon International Gold Signature Sanctuary” certification for their sustainable environmental practices.

(WORLEY, ID) – Circling Raven Golf Club continues to rack up accolades from national golf publications, the latest honor coming last week when it was once again named to GOLF magazine’s prestigious, biennial list of the Top 100 “Courses You Can Play” in America.

An amenity of the Coeur d'Alene Casino Resort Hotel in the Idaho panhandle, Circling Raven was ranked No. 92 on the list – out of roughly 13,500 U.S. public access courses – and No. 2 in the magazine’s state-by-state rankings. These GOLF magazine best-of lists are available online and will be featured in the September 2010 print edition of the magazine.

"This further proves that there is no better place in the Pacific Northwest to visit for golf and gaming enthusiasts. What’s more, the entire experience at our resort will only be further enriched with the completion of our expansion project this spring."

Last Chance to Take Advantage of $99 per night Stay-and-Play Packages
Not only is Circling Raven regularly recognized as one of the top courses in America, but it is also well-known for giving golfers the best bang for their hard-earned buck.

For proof, look no further than the special Stay-and-Play Package currently being offered that allows golfers to play this Top-100 Course in America and receive one night accommodation at the Coeur d’Alene Casino Resort & Hotel for just $99 per person (Sunday through Thursday, based on double occupancy) or $125 per person on Friday and Saturday nights. All rates include 18 holes of golf, cart, GPS, and use of 25-acre practice facility. Replays (same day) are $45.
Green fees alone at most Top-100 courses – and many non-Top-100 tracks – cost substantially more than $100, let alone include lodging and the many post-golf gaming options available at the Coeur d’Alene Casino Resort & Hotel. This is partly why Circling Raven, is considered one of the world’s great golf values.

The shotgun start begins at 1 p.m. and the cost is $100 per person, which includes golf, golf cart, use of the driving range and dinner after the tournament. There will also be an auction and raffle during the event.
About Circling Raven Golf Club and Coeur d'Alene Casino Resort & Hotel
Owned and operated by the Coeur d'Alene Tribe and convenient to Spokane (WA) airport, the casino resort and golf club are nestled on a reservation covering 345,000 acres of mountains, lakes, old-growth forest and farmland. The resort spans the western edge of the northern Rocky Mountains. Tribal history also tells us that Circling Raven was a spiritually powerful leader, his name coming from his close relationship to the raven, who helped guide him on his journeys, warn him of danger and show him where to find fish and game.

Circling Raven was created amid a unique blend of wetlands, grasslands and woodlands. At 7,189 yards, the par 72 championship layout meanders through 620 acres, only 100 representing cultivated ground. Wildlife is abundant, including elk, deer, moose and an occasional black bear. In fact, the opening was delayed due to damage on two greens by migrating elk.

The resort is regularly voted the most popular casino in the Inland Northwest and is currently undergoing an expansion project that will include two new four-story buildings, a centerpiece pub area, a gourmet steakhouse, fitness center, a 15,000 square-foot deluxe spa and pool and a 10-acre “front yard” that will offer a natural amphitheater for concerts and other outdoor events.

(KAUA'I, Hawaii) – The Kaua'i Visitors Bureau announces today that the Princeville Prince Course has been ranked 22nd on GOLF magazine’s biennial “Top-100 Courses You Can Play” list while all of five of the courses in its golf-and-resort lifestyle destination co-operative – Kaua'i: Discover Golf's Ultimate Island Green –- have been ranked on the "2010 Best Courses You Can Play" by state list.

The honored courses are:

* Princeville Prince Course (Robert Trent Jones Jr. golf course architect)
* Poipu Bay (Robert Trent Jones Jr.)
* Princeville Makai Course (Robert Trent Jones Jr.)
* Puakea (Robin Nelson)
* Kaua'i Lagoons (Jack Nicklaus)

There are more than 90 courses in Hawaii and only 20 were cited for best-of distinction. The Prince Course ranked No. 2 in the state, Poipu Bay No. 5, Makai Course No. 8, Puakea No. 16 and Kaua’i Lagoons No. 18. GOLF magazine’s complete listing is available online and will be listed in the September 2010 edition of the magazine.

The Prince Course, named for Prince Albert, son of Hawaii's King Kamehameha IV and Queen Emma, features magnificent views from 300 feet above the Pacific Ocean. The Makai Course, which is also located in the lavish Princeville at Hanalei resort, recently underwent a multi-million dollar renovation that featured the introduction of Seashore Paspalum turf grass on all tees, fairways and greens, providing spectacular playing surfaces for golfers of all skill levels.

In addition, the renovation of the famous Kiele back nine holes at Kaua’i Lagoons is being overseen by Jack Nicklaus, the original designer, and when completed in May, 2011 will feature a half-mile stretch of ocean front golf holes -- the longest in Hawaii. In the meantime, golfers can enjoy a beautiful Nicklaus layout consisting of the Kiele front nine and the back nine of the former Mokihana Golf Course. Kaua’i Lagoons is adjacent to the Kaua’i Marriott Resort on Kalapaki Beach, the oceanfront property that just completed a $50-million makeover last month (see news item below).

Also, Poipu Bay – the former home of the PGA Grand Slam of Golf that sits next to the renowned Grand Hyatt Kaua’i – is currently undergoing a similar switch to the eco-friendly Seashore Paspalum greens and is expected to re-open in December.

"Being included in the GOLF magazine rankings is further proof that the combination of golf offerings on Kaua’i is second to none," said Sue Kanoho, Executive Director of the Kaua'i Visitors Bureau. "We’re excited that our recently competed renovation projects have been so well received and that the quality of the courses currently undergoing restoration will be further enriched upon completion."

Summer travel to Kaua‘i on the rise in 2010
Visitation to Hawaii increased significantly in June as compared to last year as 625,522 travelers made their way to the state in the month, a 13.6 increase from June 2009, according to the Hawaii Tourism Authority. This marks the seventh straight month the state has seen a rise in visitor traffic.

Every island in Hawaii experienced a growth in visitors in June, including Kaua’i, which saw an increase of almost six percent. The news comes on the heels of last month’s Travel + Leisure magazine, which named the "Garden Isle" the second-best island in the world and the top destination in island-rich Hawaii for the second straight year.

Kaua‘i Marriot Resort on Kalapaki Beach unveils $50-million makeover
The new Kaua’i Marriott Resort on Kalapaki Beach was reintroduced last month with a special ceremony including a traditional Hawaiian blessing, hula dancers and musicians, following a nine-month, $50-million renovation that touched all hotel areas.

The 356-room resort is located on one of the island's most picturesque beachfronts, conveniently situated within minutes from Lihue Airport. The project included the refurbishing of a casual open-air restaurant, a newly built children’s pool to complement its signature 26,000 square-foot swimming pool, nearly 20,000 square feet of indoor meeting space and 60,000 square feet of outdoor event space in ocean, garden and pool settings.

To help commemorate the completion of the renovation, the new Kaua’i Marriott Resort on Kalapaki Beach is offering a special “Free For Fall” rate. Starting at $209, guests will enjoy:
