Bluffton, S.C. (July 27, 2010) - True Lowcountry golf cannot be complete without mossy oaks, palmettos, sand, and a heap of heat and humidity. All of those things greeted competitors during the First Round of the 59th South Carolina Open which is being played this week at May River GC at Palmetto Bluff in Bluffton, S.C.

Two competitors, one local and one from North Carolina, found a balance between comfort and competition despite the challenging conditions. Nick Jacobi, PGA Head Professional at Baden Inn Golf Resort & Club (Baden, N.C.) and local PGA apprentice Robert Wilson out of Callawassie Island Club (S.C.) managed to card 5-under 67's today, good for a one shot lead going into tomorrows cut day round.

Jacobi, who has seen success locally in North Carolina, says good practice and tee to green play is what put him in the position he's been trying so hard to get to in Carolinas PGA major tournaments. So far this year he's managed two top-20 finishes but missed the cut at the 86th Horry County State Bank Carolinas Open.

"Having a family with a small child at home makes it tough to take time to practice," said Jacobi. "This week I was able to get a couple good practice rounds in and if I continue to drive well and make a few more putts I'll be doing okay tomorrow."

Robert Wilson is playing in his first Carolinas PGA Section major tournament, and so far he's not off to a bad start. Originally from Los Angeles, Wilson came out to the Carolinas to golf, and now as an apprentice at Callawassie Island Club, he's found his groove.

The 26-year-old said "I know I can play well, I just need to stay calm." A 30-foot eagle putt topped off his day on the 535-yard par-5 15th, and that, combined with five birdies and a bogey-free back nine, will hopefully put him at ease for second round play.

Other notables include Paul Dickens, PGA, an assistant at River Landing CC in Wallace, N.C. who shares a 4-under 68 with Secession Golf Club PGA assistant Ryan Williams. Two Wilmington-area competitors, Curt Sanders, PGA, of Eagle Point Golf Club and Ivan Schronce, a PGA apprentice out of Masonboro CC, shot 3-under 69's. Payne McLeod out of Reidsville, N.C. and Sean Hassell out of Walhalla, S.C. shot 1-under 71's to lead the amateurs. Defending champion Billy Anderson, PGA Director of Golf at Eagle Point Golf Club in Wilmington, N.C. shot 76, and our most recent champion, PGA apprentice David Rogers (Berkeley Hall Club) who came away with his first win at the 46th Toshiba North Carolina Open, shot 2-over 74, seven shots out of the lead in his attempt a consecutive championship.

The South Carolina Open is a three-day, 54-hole tournament, with a cut to be established after the Second Round of play. Competitors at this year’s South Carolina Open will tee off in two flights for the First and Second Round of play at 7:30 am and 12:00 pm. Those who make the cut will tee in the Third Round on July 29 at 7:30 AM.
